Tyler's Take: I Like Being Able to Log Off Reddit in Bali

Reddit for me is the same animal as football, but it's a completely different kind of beast.

I know I'm speaking from a resume that consists of only 3 decades worth of anecdotes and no sociology degree, but has there ever been a moment in human history so many different people were able to share thoughts / knowledge / bull shit / creativity with millions of other humans they'd never meet? That's a rhetorical question, by the way, the answer's no…obvi it's no.

I'm consistently amazed at how a completely anonymous internet stranger's opinion can have such sway on my views simply because I hear their "truth" at the right time and in the right context. It's crazy! And that craziness to me is Reddit.

If you don't know Reddit, it's like a high school full of millions of students of all different ages, and we all get to write on the bathroom stalls anonymously. Sometimes it's funny, sometimes it's mean, sometimes it's insightful, short-sighted and/or weird, but at the heart of it…it has a way of thinking for you. And therein lies the problem…I've let Reddit's 22 million voices tell me what to think.

Let's say I see a Reddit post that piques my interest—my first response is:

I wonder what the top comment is?

A top comment is basically the "most popular" one. It's the result of thousands of people choosing from hundreds of ideas that they picked as the best. And honestly, it usually is "the best" in the same way that Marvel movies are "fun as hell." And the best part about it is that it's WAY EASIER than thinking for myself.

The good news is that Reddit's not allowed in Indonesia, which makes it seem like a great time to start working my POV muscle again instead of standing idly by and admiring other's work. The bad news is that it's gonna hurt my head and be frustrating and nothing will probably result in anything as good as those top comments…but, hey…you guys will keep on loving me…right?
